Peel police arrested a 30-year-old man from Vaughan in connection to a healthcare benefits scam that spanned over a 22-month period, beginning in February 2020.

On Wednesday, September 6, an extensive investigation concluded with the arrest of a suspect involved in a scam that saw an initial loss of over $600,000, police said in a news release. The victim, a healthcare benefits provider, paid out numerous benefit claims to multiple employees of a large online retailer. Some of these employees were working with the suspect to submit fraudulent claims. Once dispersed by the healthcare benefits provider, the illegally obtained funds would be shared between the individual plan member and the suspect.

Anand Pareshkumar Amin of Vaughn, has been charged with Fraud Over $5000. He was released with conditions and will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Monday, September 25, 2023, in answer to the charge.

Police shared some tips to help individuals prevent and identify benefits fraud.

“Protect your personal information, which includes your benefits plan username, password, and other access information. Never share your information for others to obtain products or services,” police advised.

Also check receipts to ensure the accuracy of services or treatment received and never sign name on blank forms. Depending on your provider’s policy, keep a copy of the original receipt to support your claim.

In addition, report any suspected abuse or fraud to your insurance company.
