OTTAWA – Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, the truck driver who caused the catastrophic Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018, just lost his latest bid to stop him from being sent back to India.
His application was denied on Thursday by Federal Court Chief Justice Paul Crampton in Ottawa.
The Canada Border Services Agency had recommended that the Calgary trucker, who was granted parole earlier this year, be deported.
Michael Green, Sidhu’s lawyer argued that his previous clean criminal record and remorse were not considered when the agency made that recommendation. He asked for a second review and that the decision be set aside. However Judge Crampton said that the agency had been fair in its assessment.
The rookie driver failed to comply with a stop sign at a rural intersection in Saskatchewan, driving into the path of the bus carrying the Humbodlt Broncos hockey team to a game in April 2018. Sidhu pleaded guilty to dangerous driving charges and was sented to eight years in prison for the crash that killed 16 people and injured 13 others.
A newly-married permanent resident, Sidhu is fighting to be allowed to stay in Canada since the deporation order.
While denying his latest plea, Judge Crampton said that Sidhu can still ask to be allowed to stay on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.
