Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau are separating after 18 years of marriage.

Their separation was announced in a statement posted on Trudeau’s instagram account.

“Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate,” the statement read.

“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything that we have built and will continue to build.

“For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy,” the statement said.

Trudeau and Grégoire became engaged in October 2004 and married on May 28, 2005, in a ceremony at Montreal’s Sainte-Madeleine d’Outremont Church.

They have three children: a boy, Xavier, born in 2007, a girl, Ella-Grace, born in 2009, and a boy, Hadrien, born in 2014.
