As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s popularity continues to trend downward, a new Nanos polls shows that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is making gains at his expense. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, on the other hand, is holding steady in third place.

Nanos tracking has Poilievre as the preferred choice as PM among 29.1 per cent of Canadians followed by Trudeau (25.8%), Singh (17.5%), May (3.5%) and Bernier (2.7%). Eighteen per cent of Canadians were unsure whom they preferred.

The preference for Trudeau to continue in the prime minister’s office fell almost two percentage points in a week from 27.2% to 25.8%. While Poilievre moved up from 28.4% to 29.1% as the top choice for PM, Singh fell slightly from 17.8% to 17.5%.

The Nanos Index which is a composite of a series of measures including ballot and leadership impressions has the Conservatives at 50.0 points, followed by the Liberals at 48.1 points, the NDP with 46.2 points, the Greens 32.4 points, the People’s Party 26.0 points and the BQ 38.8 points (QC only).

The Weekly Nanos Tracking data is based on random interviews with 1,000 Canadian consumers (recruited by RDD land- and cell-line sample), using a four-week rolling average of 250 respondents each week, 18 years of age and over. The random sample of 1,000 respondents may be weighted using the latest census information for Canada. The interviews are compiled into a four-week rolling average of 1,000 interviews where each week, the oldest group of 250 interviews is dropped and a new group of 250 interviews is added.

A random survey of 1,108 respondents in Canada is accurate 3.0 percentage points, plus or minus, 19 times out of 20. This report is based on the
four waves of tracking ending July 7, 2023.
