Mississauga (Mar 12) – Mississauga is hiring hundreds of election workers for the 2024 By-election being held on Monday, June 10.

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and legally entitled to work in Canada.

“Being involved in the upcoming by-election is an excellent opportunity to connect with your local community,” said Diana Rusnov, City Clerk and Director, Legislative Services. “When applying, you have the option to either apply alone or form a team with friends and family. This allows all group members to work at the same voting location. We make every effort to meet these requests whenever possible.”

On by-election day, workers are required to start work at 8:30 a.m. their day will end no earlier than 9 p.m. or when their Location Manager dismisses them – whichever is later.

They will also be required to participate in training and there may be additional duties for some roles such as the transportation of supplies and equipment beyond the specified working hours. You can find more details about specific duties in the job descriptions.

Election workers are required to do up to three-hours of in-person or virtual instruction-led training, depending on the position. Certain positions may also require that they complete an additional online training module.

Positions and job descriptions

Deputy Returning Officer

  • Verify the identities of electors
  • Issue ballots to qualified electors
  • Use a computer application to strike names off the electronic voters’ list
  • Revise the voters’ list as necessary
  • Assist with setting up and packing up laptops
  • Must have experience using a laptop, have a strong attention to detail and be able to sit and work at a laptop for an extended period

Operator

  • Feed marked ballots through a vote tabulator
  • Ensure the vote tabulator is operating properly
  • Pick up and return the vote tabulator to/from a designated location
  • Assist with voting location set up, opening and closing
  • Must have a valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle on by-election day to transport the vote tabulator to and from the voting location
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time

Information Officer

  • Serve as a greeter at the entrance to the voting location
  • Ask electors if they have a Voter Notification Card and/or identification ready
  • Assist with voting location set up, opening and closing
