Peel police announced today that it has launched the annual Holiday Season R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign as part of ongoing and collaborative efforts to reduce impaired driving.

“We are proud to partner with MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Canada as part of our strategy to address impaired driving. Our Holiday Season RIDE program has already checked over 5,000 vehicles and will continue through to early January. Please plan ahead as you enjoy the upcoming festive season,” said Peel police chief Nishan Duraiappah.

Although R.I.D.E. checks are conducted yearly, the annual Holiday Season campaign is marked by increased enforcement levels by deploying additional officers. These other officers are deployed from all police divisions and Road Safety Services.

Police said that road safety is a shared responsibility, adding that anyone who consumes alcoholic beverages or drugs should not drive.

“Ensure that you have a plan to get home by having a designated driver, an alternate place to stay or use public transportation,” police said in a news release.

“If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911,” Police chief Duraiappah added. “Together, we can Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere!”

The Peel Police Services Board also announced today, the extension of Chief Nishan Duraiappah’s contract to 2028. Chief Duraiappah, who assumed the role on October 1, 2019, has been instrumental in advancing the vision and mission of the Police Services Board and Peel Regional Police and has demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout his tenure, the Board said in a statement.
