Peel police announced today that they have issued nearly 800 stunt driving charges in a short span of five months in the region comprising Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.
“Illegal street racing and aggressive high-speed driving continue to be a problem on our roads,” police said in a news release.
That charges laid were part of Project E.R.A.S.E. (Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere) and Project Noisemaker program which targets vehicles with modified and/or excessively loud exhaust systems.
From May 1 to October 1, officers identified hotspot locations throughout the Region of Peel and targeted those areas as part of the program strategy. During this time, police investigated 941 vehicles and issued 1230 Provincial Offence Notices.
The offences included 783 stunt driving charges, 170 Improper/No Muffler charges, and 25 Criminal Code charges related to impaired and dangerous driving.
“We remind the public that street racing is illegal and that it endangers the safety of everyone on the road,” police stated. “To ensure safety on our roads, Peel Regional Police will have zero tolerance for dangerous driving behaviours and street racing activities. Our officers remain vigilant twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.”
