More Ontarians are celebrating Diwali than ever before. However, in the past few years, concerns over personal fireworks in Ontario have changed how this joyful celebration is observed. Leaving local festivals to carry out the only light shows their communities will experience during Diwali.
Last year, Ottawa implemented a fireworks ban that significantly altered local celebrations. Food Basics recognized this shift and hosted a spectacular 250-drone light show for the entire community to enjoy. On Friday, October 25th, over 500 Ottawans gathered at the Capital’s Diwali Mela to witness a best-in-class drone light show.
“We understand how deeply significant fireworks are within Diwali celebrations and recognize the disappointment many felt due to City restrictions,” said Rhys Lyons, District Manager, Food Basics. “The drone show is our way of doing something special and honouring the tradition of celebrating light conquering darkness, in a new and exciting way.”
In response to this need, Food Basics reached out to Priya Puri from Ottawa Indian Events to discuss how they were planning on bringing light to the event with the regional band, and offered to help in an innovative way. She expressed her gratitude for this important gift: “So many people in the South Asian community are living away from home and drawing together at Diwali is essential.” She further added, “We are immensely proud to have been selected by Food Basics for this drone show and the community was amazed at the images the drones created!” The event took place at St. Elias Banquet Hall in Ottawa where guests enjoyed food, performances, and games, capping the night off with the drone light show
