Niagara border crossings between Canada and the United States were closed on Wednesday after an explosion on the American side of the Rainbow Bridge.
The Peace, Rainbow and Queenston/Lewiston bridges were closed Wednesday afternoon according to local law enforcement officials.
The FBI Buffalo Field Office said it was “investigating a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge” in a post on X (formerly called Twitter).
“The FBI is coordinating with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners in this investigation,” the post read. “As this situation is very fluid, that’s all we can say at this time.”
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sgt. Kerry Schmidt confirmed the closures in a video posted on X.
“We have major issues right now at the US borders in the Niagara Region,” Schmidt said in the video.
He urged anyone planning on crossing the border to delay travel until the closures have reopened.
Confirming that there was an explosion at Rainbow Bridge, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told lawmakers that “this is obviously a very serious situation in Niagara Falls”.
Trudeau said there are many questions and that “we are following up to try and get as many answers as rapidly as possible”.
“We in close contact with US officials and we will continue to work closely with them,” he added.
