Markham (Feb 22) – Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit have charged five teenagers for attempting to rob a jewelry store in Markham.
On Monday, February 12 at 5 p.m., police were called to a jewelry store in the area of Yonge Street and Doncaster Drive for reports of suspicious people. Information received was that it appeared the suspects were about to commit a robbery. When officers arrived, they located three males. One was placed in custody while two others fled. Following the arrest of the first suspect, officers found he was in possession of a hammer.
As the investigation continued, police identified a suspect vehicle that had been stolen during a violent carjacking in Toronto.
On Wednesday, February 21, investigators, along with members of the York Regional Police Emergency Response, Canine and Air Support Units, located the suspect vehicle in a grocery store parking lot in the area of Highway 7 and Baldwin Street South in Whitby and arrested the five occupants.
During the arrest, a replica firearm was located on one of the accused. Investigators later executed two criminal code search warrants at residences in Ajax. A loaded handgun was seized from one of the residences.
Kayron Walters (18) of Ajax, Tafiyah Eccleston (18) of Oshawa, a 16-year-old male of Ajax, 16-year-old female of Brampton and 17-year-old male of Oshawa have all been charged with Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence – Robbery.
