Mississauga is asking for residents input via an online survey to help develop the City’s diabetes strategy.

Type 2 diabetes is rapidly affecting a growing number of Mississauga residents and the City says it is working with partners, experts and communities on how to prevent rising cases and protect residents’ health and well-being.

Based on projections from 2015 to 2016, Peel Region is expected to have almost 100,000 new cases of diabetes over the following 10 years, putting a significant strain on the Region’s healthcare system including an estimated cost of $643 million.

The online survey will help generate insights and identify areas of change, the City said in a statement.

Diabetes is a serious medical condition that affects the way the body regulates and uses sugar as a fuel. This long-term (chronic) condition results in too much sugar circulating in the bloodstream.

Type 2 diabetes can be prevented if detected and effectively managed at an early stage. Some risk factors be controlled via healthy eating and being active. Mississauga believes it can play a role in other factors such as the shape of its neighbourhoods, locations of parks and walkways, types of programs at community centres or information at libraries.

To help prevent diabetes, Mississauga joined the Cities Changing Diabetes (CCD) program in 2021 to connect to an international network of municipalities building and sharing strategies to prevent and manage diabetes. CCD was launched in 2014 by the Steno Diabetes Centre Copenhagen, University College London and Novo Nordisk.

Mississauga residents are urged to complete the survey before Thursday, November 30.
