The City of Brampton, together with Downtown Brampton Business Improvement Area (BIA) and 8-80 Cities, have transformed a corner of the Nelson Square Surface Parking Lot into the Nelson Square Pocket Park, promoting healthy, diverse and sustainable lifestyles.
Located within the Nelson Street Parking Lot at the corner of Diplock Lane and George Street North, the Nelson Square Pocket Park features creative lighting, interactive seating, and greenery. The Pocket Park will host local programming to keep the community active and engaged, like karate and yoga classes.
The park also features art inspired by nature, created by of Shawn Howe. Shawn Howe is Anishinaabe, Irish, Scottish, and French hailing from Neyaashiinigmiing First Nation, with membership in Sipekne’katik First Nation.
As part of the Activate Downtown Brampton program, Nelson Square Pocket Park is a green and innovative new space for social gatherings that will encourage residents and visitors to explore Brampton’s unique laneways or attend community events.
“Downtown Brampton has so much to offer,” Mayor Patrick Brown said in a statement. The area is undergoing a transformation that will attract more opportunities while providing a space for residents and visitors to come together. By revitalizing a parking lot to now include the Nelson Square Pocket Park. We are making the best use of underutilized public spaces”.
