York police have charged six youth from Toronto, recovered six stolen vehicles and seized a loaded handgun from a 17-year-old in connection with an armed carjacking in Markham.
On July 13 at 1:15 a.m., police responded to a report of a carjacking on Enterprise Boulevard. Two victims had just entered their Mercedes CLA45 vehicle in a parking lot when they were blocked from behind by suspects in a white Hyundai Elantra. Two male suspects got out and approached them, one armed with a handgun and the other indicating he was armed. They demanded the victims’ vehicle, phones and wallets. Both suspects got into the Mercedes and drove it away in tandem with the white Elantra which had other suspects in it. Fortunately, the victims were not physically harmed in this incident.
Through investigation, multiple suspects were identified. On July 27, police officers from York, Peel and the Toronto executed search warrants at the suspects’ residences in Toronto. Six stolen vehicles were recovered, including the white Hyundai Elantra which had been stolen during a home invasion robbery in Peel Region earlier that month. Investigators also seized a loaded Glock handgun that was found in the bedroom of a 17-year-old suspect.
Joemar Derby (18), Akinbowale Monday (18), Yahye Mahamed (18), and three male youths (two aged 17 and one 15-year-old) face several charges. They are all from Toronto.
Police are advising people to remain vigilant and be aware of their surroundings in public. They should also call police right away to report suspicious persons or activity, or any time they feel unsafe or believe they are being followed.
