Maa Sagar: Taking South Indian cuisine up a notch

When it comes to ‘South Indian cuisine, Maa Sagar (meaning “True love of Mother”) restaurant in Mississauga gives its customers a choice that is hard to beat in three versions – spicy, medium and mild.
South Indian food comes from four regions – Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, each cuisine has a distinctive flavour.
The most popular are dosas, available in a hundred varieties followed by idly, vada and uthapam.
The location and free parking at a bustling plaza at the corner of Highway 10 and Bristol Road East is ideal for diners coming in from any direction.
There is plenty to choose from starting with soups, appetizers and main courses. The traditional soup called “Rasam” made from special ingredients known to increase one’s appetite, is a good way to start the meal.
Other soups like tomato, sweetcorn, Tommyam are also great choices. Next you can move onto some appetizers like Onion Pakora, Chilli bajji or Veg Cutlets served with chutney.
Or you could simply order the special MAA SAGAR South Indian Thali, which includes rice, roti, curries and dessert.
Depending on your tastes, you could also enjoy Chatpata chats as well. Some of the hundred varieties of Dosa are Chettinadu Masala Dosa, Mysore Banaras Dosa, Cheese Palak Dosa, Manchurian Dosa and Bombay Pav Baji Dosa.  When it come to idly, uthapam and vadas, the favourites are- Idly Sambar, Idly Rasam, Dhai Idly (sweet/salt), Onion Uthapam, Cheese Onion Uthapam and Dhai Vada. Besides, the restaurant also caters to Jains (No garlic, No onion) and kids with items like Bullet Idly, Chocolate  Dosa, Cheese Dosa, Jam Dosa, Candy Dosa and kids favorite, Ice cream Dosa.
In the future Maa Sagar will introduce items like Avakai Dosa made with spicy mango pickle. A dosa popular among non-South Asian Canadians is Spring Dosa made with a filling of mixed vegetables in mild indian spices.
